Martin grew up in Toledo, Ohio, and graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1983. He spent ten years living as a songwriter in Texas and Tennessee and also spent time abroad in England. In 1993, he earned a BA in Art History from the University of Toledo. Afterward, he worked as an assistant for the internationally known glass artist Jon Kuhn in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Martin returned to Toledo and earned his law degree from the University of Toledo College of Law, being admitted to the Ohio Bar in 1998. With extensive litigation experience in private practice within state and federal courts, he is also a former prosecuting attorney.
